We’ve all been told “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch!”
But here at Liberty Lake, we are so excited, that we just have to share what we are counting on this summer with our inaugural foray into the world of CHICKENS! Our newest additions to camp will give our campers a comprehensive look into what it takes to raise chickens, as well as the science of an egg turning into a chicken.
So with 30 days until camp kicks off, here are our Top 8 chicken experiences we cannot wait to have this summer!
#8: Arrival of the Coop
A big shout out to Jamey and the nice folks from New Egypt Agway for sponsoring our awesome new chicken coop! The birds will be coming soon, and any campers at camp the first few weeks of the season will be helping decorate for their “Coop-warming” party! All a part of the new WILDLIFE elective (choose it online now!)
#7: Naming of the Birds
We love how creative our campers can be, so when it comes to naming these little guys, we expect to hear some wild suggestions! Be sure to keep an eye out for the full roster this summer!
#6: Early Morning Crowing
There is nothing more iconic than a rooster crowing in the early morning. So what better way for all our Before-Care campers to be greeted each morning than with a friendly COCKA-DOODLE-DOO from our fine feathered friends?
#5: Guessing the Colors
Chicks come in all kinds of colors- so why not make a game of it- Maybe there will be slushie prizes to whoever picks the right number of each color…
#4: A Basket Full of Chicks!
Is there anything cuter than a tiny fuzzy peeping chick? Yes, a dozen tiny fuzzy peeping chicks! Chicks are surprisingly social and curious, the more they see the kids, the friendlier they will become, so get ready to see some amazingly cute friendships form!
#3: Candling the Eggs
Life is a beautiful thing, and we will be documenting the process from day 1. Every few days before the eggs hatch, we will be showing Liberty Lake a glimpse of what’s happening on the other side of the shell through a magical process called CANDLING.
#2: Egg Delivery Day
In early June, we will be waiting with baited breathe for our special cargo to arrive. The coop will be in place, the brooder will be set up, and the incubator will be warm- all to give our eggs a head start on the 2015 Camp Season!
#1: Hatching Day
It takes 21 days for an egg to hatch- Thats just 3 weeks! So over a the course of about 24 hours, during week 2, we will go from seeing a box full of eggs, to seeing our new little buddies taking their first step!!!
