Unknown Electives

At LLDC, you make a list of electives that you want on the website. This then goes through a system that decides what you get. As some of you have noticed, you may always get a particular elective even if it is at the bottom of your list. For example, gaga is a very easy elective to get into. This is because gaga is so popular, it can be run every period. Now what about electives that aren’t as popular?

Campers that have come to LLDC for a long time may be able to recall electives that aren’t around anymore. Some of these electives are mountain boarding, spa, ultimate frisbee, pro golf, bowling, Harry Potter club, book club, game club, beekeeping and newcomb. But how do they decide what electives leave? Well, that is up to Andy and Brandi. Before camp starts, they talk about what electives should stay and what should leave. How do they decide?

Well they look at the popularity of different electives. Many kids may have noticed the report their group leaders do every week. This may be helpful in deciding what to keep but not much. What they really look at is how many people are in an elective and how many periods the elective is run. Here is a list of electives that aren’t too popular and what is happening with them.

Dinosaur Rock: Not very popular in general. Sophmores like it more than freshmen.

Freshmen Drama: Not very popular until after the musical. Then it becomes popular.

Glee Club: It goes back and forth popularity wise.

Green Team: Decently popular just not in seniors and above.

Liberty Blog: Gets around 2 or 3 people and run 2 periods maximum. It’s about writing which drives most kids away.

Set & Costume Design: Pretty popular.

Sign Language: Not to popular because it’s about kids learning a new language but recently it’s been growing.

Songwriting: It doesn’t get enough people to run every week.

S.T.E.M.: It’s fairly popular but gets looked down upon because it’s about learning.

Survival Skills: Only popular during the overnight.

Tower of Power: Sometimes it’s popular, sometimes it’s not.

Wildlife: It has been popular this summer. Most likely because of the chickens.

Wiffle Ball: It’s not very popular but it’s running this week.

Will’s World: Newcomers are rare but once they come, they stay.

Many electives may leave soon because they don’t have enough people. If you are in one of these electives, tell your group leader that it’s your favorite elective. It would help electives such as Dinosaur Rock from going extinct.
