In this advanced, selective program, Counselors in Training (CITs) take on a significant amount of responsibility and are expected to be the leaders of our camp community. The CIT Program is designed for young, talented people who are highly motivated and looking to challenge themselves. The CIT Program is much more than “one more year of Camp,” it’s a commitment towards becoming a true leader and making a difference in the lives of others.

The CIT experience features several key components, all of which are designed to challenge, motivate and inspire program participants to become dynamic leaders:

  • Service to Camp and the Community: CITs use the leadership tools learned in training workshops and apply them to real-life challenges and projects that impact both our camp and the community around us. CITs complete a wide range of cooperative and hands-on projects, such as engaging in fundraising initiatives for our Liberty Lake Foundation and preparing for our Camp’s annual Homecoming Event. These projects reinforce leadership lessons and provide Teen Leaders with the opportunity to positively impact others in tangible ways.
  • Leadership Skills Training: These interactive sessions are mentally challenging and hands-on. Training Workshops at the 10th grade level reinforce lessons from the LIT Program and focus on higher-level concepts such as empathy, acceptance of diversity and planning for their future.
  • Challenge Training – Adventure & Teambuilding Activities: CITs participate in challenging experiences that force them to push themselves mentally and emotionally. These moments provide memorable growth opportunities, and are designed to prepare them to be confident when facing real life experiences.
  • Camp Counselor Interns: CITs assist Group Leaders, Counselors and Specialists throughout the day during electives, swim, group activities and special events. CITs also get practice in leading groups, facilitating special events & planning camper activities.

CITs receive consistent support and guidance from all members of the Liberty Lake Staff.  Specialists, Group Leaders and Directors assist our Teen Mentors (the teen staff) in supporting them throughout every step of their leadership journey. CITs receive weekly formal feed back and performance evaluations, giving them concrete and valuable feedback on their experience.

While the Teen Leadership Program helps participants be able to be leaders in life, it does not necessarily ensure future employment at Liberty Lake Day Camp. CIT participation should be based on a strong interest in learning important leadership skills, making friends, and having a great summer. If they end up working at Liberty Lake or any other summer camp, that’s great, but not obligatory. That said, we tell the CITs, that their last day of their program is at a Liberty Lake job interview, where they can practice the interview skills we teach them!

The CIT Program has a strictly limited enrollment and any interested individual must apply and fulfill all of the necessary application requirements. Complete details of the CIT Application process are available in the “Signing Up” section below. CITs must attend Camp for a minimum 4 weeks enrollment.

Program Extras & Trips

  • Teen Retreat: This magical experience is about challenging our teens to really think about who they are, who they want to become and what type of leader do they want to strive for. It’s about moving forward as a leader and empowering them to use their voice for positivity. This fun, yet challenging experience is facilitated by our stellar LIT Teen Mentors at an off-site location, that we will take a bus to, and stay overnight.
  • Plus impromptu parties, after-camp events, and an end of summer dance!

Signing Up

  • 10th grade Program Applicants must complete the CIT Application process, which consists of the online form, 2 letters of reference and a copy of your current or most recent grade report. Please click here for a complete description of the CIT Application Process.
  • Applicants who were not a part of the 9th Grade Program may also be asked to take part in an onsite-interview with one of the program directors.
  • Within 2 weeks of submitting all of the application parts, camper will receive an acceptance decision letter.
  • If it hasn’t been done already, Parent/Guardian must complete the online Camper Registration Application for a minimum of 4 week session, not including “post-week.”
  • The deadline for completing all parts of the application is June 1.
